Plymouth Clutch |
The power that is consumed by your Plymouth comes from your vehicle’s engine generated during combustion. Even the mechanical force that enables your wheels to run is also supplied by the engine through the transmission system. It serves as the intermediate system which passes on the torque produced by the engine to the wheels the torque needed for running your Plymouth.
Between the engine and the transmission lies is a component known as your Plymouth clutch. Clutches are actually used in many other types of machines aside from automobiles. Among vehicles, they are employed to easily engage and disengage the transmission and wheels to or from the engine. The most basic components of the clutch are the clutch disc and the pressure plate. They perform their tasks along with the springs, studs, throw-out bearing, clutch housing, and release fork.
The clutch is basically controlled by the clutch pedal. When your foot is off the pedal, the pressure plate and the clutch disc are pressed against the spinning flywheel of the engine. This locks the engine and the transmission, causing them to spin together. The clutch disc is composed of a material that is similar with the lining of brake pads. This material produces a great amount of friction and enables the efficient transmission of power. Once you need to stop your Plymouth, you need first to step on the clutch pedal. That way, the springs are triggered to pull the pressure plate, releasing the clutch disc and the entire clutch assembly from the spinning engine. This easy disengaging makes it possible to stop the wheels of your vehicle from running without the need of turning off the engine at all.
Because of the continuous engaging and disengaging that the clutch performs as you run your Plymouth daily, the friction material in the clutch disc wears and thins out through time. This usually results to a condition called slipping, which then leads to the failure of power transfer from the engine to the wheels. In some cases, the throw-out bearing can also wear, and the symptom that you will usually notice is a rumbling noise whenever you engage the clutch.
If your Plymouth clutch starts losing its ability to handle the power that your transmission system needs to deliver to the wheels, then perhaps one of its components is already damaged.
