Contemporary Oldsmobile units typically make use of two transmission systems, where the automatic or the manual type is featured as either standard or optional. On the other hand, the earlier Oldsmobile models are equipped only with the manual transmission. The two systems basically differ when it comes to sophistication. And apparently, it is the automatic transmission system that’s offering state-of-the-art engineering concept, while the manual type still depends with clutches.

Clutch is an indispensable friction component comprised of a disc and pressure plate assembly. It’s a contraption which connects the engine to the manual transmission in order to allow gear shifting, so as disconnect the two. Upon connecting the two contraptions, they will spin together at the same speed. Significantly, clutch controls the slippage between the spinning engine and non-spinning transmission for smooth engagement. On the other hand when they are disconnected, the wheels are permitted to stop spinning without turning the engine off. And much like the brakes, its operational effectiveness depends on the amount of pressure applied on the clutch pedal.

A problematic clutch will cause trouble in the drivetrain wherein you’ll have a hard time shifting gears. The problem that may occur with your Oldsmobile clutch is wearing. However, this only happens when the driver frequently slips the clutch. Apparently, the engine’s flywheel and clutch disc will spin at different speeds. Another aspect that can cause a clutch to malfunction is the throw-out bearing. When it’s no longer in good condition, you’ll normally experience rumbling noise every time the clutch engages, wherein the other parts might as well be affected.

However, in a Oldsmobile and other automobiles, it’s not only the manual transmission system that’s utilizing a clutch. In fact, automatic transmission systems possess several clutches which are designed to engage and disengage gears. The a/c compressor features a magnetic type of clutch which allows it to shut off and turn on again while the engine stays in operation just by the use of current. Radiator fan too has a clutch, a thermostatic one. Heat basically mans its operation, where high temperature causes the thickening of clutch oil which in turn triggers faster spinning. If the engine temperature is low and the clutch oil is cold, the radiator fan runs slower. And with the traction system, limited slip differentials or viscous couplings work with a clutch in improving traction. These various types of clutches as well as the Oldsmobile clutches for transmission systems are available here at PartsTrain.
