Some car owner tends to forget that the clutch is an essential component of a vehicle's setup. Cars basically need a clutch because the engine spins all the time and the car wheels don’t. In order for a vehicle to stop without killing the engine, the wheels need to be somehow disconnected from the engine. This is where clutches come in. Clutches perform a tough job. It engages and disengages from the flywheel in a split second and transfers all torque through the transmission.
The amount of force the clutch can hold depends on the friction between the clutch plate and the flywheel and how much force the spring puts on the pressure plate. When engaging the clutch, the engine speed may need to be increased from idle using the manual throttle so that the engine does not stop. However, raising the engine speed too high will cause extreme clutch plate wear and cause a harsh, bumpy start. There are many types of clutch design. But most are based on one or more friction disc pushed tightly together or against a flywheel using springs.
Other clutches are found in a vehicle. The radiator fan may have a clutch that is heat activated. When the
temperature is low, the fluid is thin and so the clutch slips. But when the temperature is high, the fluid thickens causing the fan to spin. The air conditioning compressor in a car can also have a magnetic clutch. When current flows through a magnetic coil in the clutch, the clutch engages. When the current stops, the clutch disengages.
Amont the most common problems that clutches encounter is that the friction material on the disc wears out. When most of the friction metal is gone, the clutch will start to slip and it would no longer transmit any power from the engine to the wheels. A slipping clutch needs to be immediately replaced. One way of knowing that you need to replace your clutch is when your clutch begins to act up before you take a long trip. Take note that clutches burn out fast due to heat, friction, haphazard driving and pressure. The longer you drive with a busted clutch, the greater the wear and tear on the vehicle.
