Volkswagen Catalytic Converter

Catalytic converters are emission-control products that are designed to clean up the exhausts created by gasoline-powered engines. Gasoline-powered internal combustion engines produce carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides as byproducts of its combustion process. It is the function of catalytic converters to convert these harmful substances into less harmful ones, like carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and water. A typical catalytic converter is also often equipped with a control system that can accurately measure the amount of oxygen present inside the engine during the combustion process. Such control system would then transfer whatever information it has gathered to the engine computer, which in turn could adjust the air-to-fuel ratio that is injected to the engine. In this way, a near perfect combustion process, one that creates less harmful byproducts, can be easily achieved.
