There was a time in the history of the automobile industry when people assumed that the performance of a vehicle is directly proportional to its size. This lead people to assume that larger vehicles perform better, and larger engines generate more power. But this perception changed when the country was hit by the fuel crisis of the 1970s, followed by the enforcement of stricter regulations on vehicle engine emissions. Catalytic converters are emission-control products that clean up the exhaust of gasoline-powered engines. The clean up process is done by converting the harmful gases, namely carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, in the engine’s exhaust into less harmful ones. With a catalytic converter installed in a vehicle, the vehicle emits less harmful substances and more importantly, it saves you from violating certain federal transportation rules.

The catalytic converter is a part of your vehicle’s engine exhaust system. From the outside, the catalytic converter looks like a muffler, but inside, you’ll find a lot of difference between the two. A typical catalytic converter is made up of two catalysts: the reduction catalyst and the oxidation catalyst. The reduction catalyst is often made from platinum and rhodium while the oxidation catalyst is made of platinum and palladium. These two catalysts may be constructed in the honeycomb structure or in the ceramic beads structure.

So, how long would Toyota and the other Japanese auto manufacturers be successful now that catalytic converters are widely used for most vehicles? While other Japanese manufacturers take it negatively, Toyota welcomes the introduction of the catalytic converter on a positive note.
