But how does catalytic converters protect the environment? All gasoline-powered engines create harmful byproducts during its combustion process. Among these harmful substances that are created are carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides. Unluckily, most Mazda vehicles are equipped with gasoline-powered engines. In order for Mazda vehicles to convert these harmful substances into less harmful ones before they are released to the outside environment, these substances must pass through the catalytic converter. Catalytic converters are emission-control products designed to reduce the harmful substances emitted by vehicles. Inside a catalytic converter are two catalysts: a reduction catalyst that converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen, and an oxidation catalyst that converts the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons into less harmful carbon dioxide and water.
Catalytic converters are so essential in protecting the environment, that’s why the law requires every vehicle that would be driven on public roads to be equipped with properly functioning catalytic converters. So if the catalytic converter of your Mazda is no longer working properly, you better replace it with another one. Catalytic converters may fail because they are clogged or they are poisoned. A clogged catalytic converter may easily be determined because if such condition exists, you’ll notice that your vehicle doesn’t go any faster no matter how hard you push the gas pedal. You’ll also notice a decrease in your vehicle’s gas mileage if the catalytic converter is clogged.
So if your Mazda is already eating too much gas or fails to accelerate no matter how hard you step on the gas pedal, it may be the proper time to replace its catalytic converter.
