Such three-way catcons have become the most important component of vehicle emission control systems in North American vehicles.

On the other hand, two-way catalytic converters perform the same tasks as that of the three-way catcons but less the reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen. Such catcons are the ones employed on diesel powered engines to lessen hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions which happen to be one of major air pollution contributory element.
