Acura Catalytic Converter

Air pollution is one of the main problems that large cities in the United States face. And based from research and studies, the amount of pollution that all vehicles produce together is one of the main causes of this. That is why, to solve this problem, various clean-air laws are created and enacted to control the amount of pollution that vehicles can produce. Car manufacturers now keep up with these laws by making refinements to their lines of vehicles especially on the engine and fuel systems. And to reduce car emissions, they have developed a device which treats the exhaust before it leaves the vehicle. This device is called the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter, just like the Acura catalytic converter, is a vehicle component that is designed to reduce the three main regulated emissions such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. Hydrocarbon or VOC, on the other hand, is a gas that is usually produced from unburned fuel that evaporates. When sunlight breaks this and turns it to oxidant, this often reacts with nitrogen oxide to cause O3 or ground level ozone which is a major component of smog. But there is another gas that contributes to smog and also acid rain. This is nitrogen oxide, a known gas that causes irritation to human mucus membranes.

But if there are harmful emissions, there are also emissions that are mostly benign such as nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Nitrogen gas consists 78% of air’s total percentage and this passes right through the vehicle’s engine. Carbon dioxide, on the other hand, is a product of combustion since carbon in the fuel bonds with the air’s oxygen. And just like carbon dioxide, water vapor is another product of combustion. But in this, it is the hydrogen in the fuel that bonds with the air’s oxygen. These three emissions are mostly benign, although carbon dioxide emission is said to contribute to global warming. These emissions are not harmful to the environment, although carbon dioxide emission is believed to contribute to global warning. But since the combustion process is far from perfect, harmful emissions are produced and had to be reduced through the use of catalytic converter.
