Fiat CV Joint |
Fiat Constant Velocity (CV) Joint is connected to the end of a drive shaft. This is very important for the transportation of torque to the steered wheels at constant speed, while managing the tough up and down motions of the suspension. CV joints are typically placed in all front-wheel drive cars. Rear- and four-wheel drive vehicles are the usual users of the CV joints. Each CV joint is packed with grease and protected with rubber or plastic boot.
The important responsibility of the CV joint lies on the link between the stub shaft, the wheel hub, and bearing assembly. Older front-wheel-drive vehicles are employed for having unequal length shafts, leading to a driving characteristic known as “torque steer”. Torque steer is simply conveyed by pulling to one side while accelerating. Most vehicles today are having equal length shafts on both sides to neutralize the effects of torque steer.
CV joint maintenance is not a requirement because it is designed to deliver remarkable durability as long as the protective boot is not damaged. The two common types of CV joints are the tripod-type and the ball-type. These two are very different in so many aspects. The ball-type CV joints usually apply for the outer side of the drive shaft, while the tripod-type CV joints are typically for the inner side. Damaged CV joints are always due to the failure of the protective boot. This is when the grease comes out and the moisture and dirt come in. Eventually, such occurrence causes the CV joint to break due to corrosion and lack of lubrication.
The protective boot that has failed can be realized on its early stage of defect. Thus, as soon as it is detected, the CV joint boot must be replaced and repacked with fresh grease to fix the problem instantly. Don’t ever try to continue driving if you have a broken boot, since the CV joint or the whole drive shaft will be further damaged. The associated components may have to be replaced whether you like it or not if you become stubborn enough to drive it with broken boot. The CV joint would disjoin and will stop the vehicle from running. If there is a clicking or popping noise when turning, check the CV Joints at once for failure has just occurred!
