Eagle CV Joint |
An Eagle Constant Velocity Joint or simply referred to as CV joint is attached to an end of a drive shaft. It is needed to transport the torque to steered wheels at a constant speed, while accommodating the up and down motions of the suspension. The CV joints are found in all front-wheel drive cars. There are several rear- and four-wheel drive cars and trucks that have CV joints today. A CV joint is packed with grease and protected by a rubber or plastic boot.
The CV joint connects to a stub shaft that links with the wheel hub and bearing assembly. The Older front-wheel-drive vehicles are used for having unequal length shafts, which led to a driving characteristic known as “torque steer”. This torque steer is pulling to one side while accelerating. Modern cars have equal length shafts on both sides, which neutralize the effects of torque steer
Maintenance for a CV joint is not a requirement since it is said to deliver amazing durability provided that the protective boot will not get damaged. There are two common types of CV joints: the ball-type and the tripod-type. There are lots of variations between these two types. The ball-type CV joints are often used for the outer side of the drive shaft, as the tripod-type CV joints are typically for the inner side. A common problem with the CV joints occurs once the protective boot gets damaged. The grease comes out and the moisture and dirt come in, this eventually causes the CV joint to fail due to corrosion and lack of lubrication.
The damaged boot that is realized on its early stage of defect must let its CV joint boot replaced and repacked with fresh grease that will finally fix the problem. Once you continue driving with a broken boot, the CV joint or the whole drive shaft will be further damaged. Hence, the associated components will have to be replaced whether you like it or not. The CV joint may possibly disjoin, making the vehicle stop running. In case you hear a clicking or popping noise when turning, you must probably check your CV Joints right away!
