Brake rotors basically wear out under heavy braking or when you have braked too late. During heavy braking the rotors can reach very high levels of heat. This can result to brake fade because the rotors are too hot for the brake pads to get a firm grip. High performance brake rotors are usually made from forged steel. This makes a lighter brake component, meaning your unsprung weight is less, hence, improving your cornering, braking and acceleration.
High performance brake rotors are usually cross-drilled. This helps to remove super-heated boundary layer gases. Because heavy braking can cause the pad material to vaporize, cross-drilling gives the thin layer of vaporized brake pad material a place to escape, preventing the brake pads from slipping on a layer of superheated gas. Likewise, cross-drilling increases ventilation and internal cooling by giving the air circulating through the rotor's internal vents additional cooling paths.
Normally brake rotors don’t wear out all that often. After all, they are made of steel and your brake pads are not. But if you race your car or use it often, you will chew your rotors up and you would have to refinish them. Refinishing can help end the vibrating that you experience when you step on the brakes. But eventually you will have to replace your Lincoln brake rotors. This way you will have improved brake performance and stop the squealing noise that you hear every time you apply the brakes. If the semi-metallic fillings are the reason for the squeal every time you apply the brake, you can minimize it by refinishing and placing a thin cover of silicone at the rear of the brake pads.
