A GMC brake rotor is a flat disk-like plate that serves as the friction surface in a disc brake. The brake rotor is positioned between the brake pads which are being held by the brake calipers. When the hydraulic fluid pressure is applied to the brake calipers, the brake pads are squeezed against the brake rotors which then produce friction and heat. The brake rotors are usually made of iron with highly machined surfaces.
The brake rotors undergo some wear and it is usually in the form of ridges and groves. The frequent application of the brakes also causes the frequent “grabbing “of the brake pads with the brake rotors. This may eventually cause the brake rotor to have uneven or high spot on its surface. If this happen, the brake pads may no longer have an even contact with the brake rotors thus, decreasing the vehicle’s ability to stop. To make the brake rotor’s surface smooth and even, it can be machined off but only to an extent. If the brake rotors are cut below the minimum, it will not be able to handle the heat that the brakes generate.
Heat cracks, worn out and rough finished rotors will cause brake squealing. The squealing is caused by vibration between the brake pads, brake rotors and brake calipers. If the squealing is not caused by worn out brake pads, it can be reduced by having the brake rotors refinished and a thin layer of silicone compound placed on the back of the brake pads.
