The rotor is usually thick to dissipate the heat produced by the friction of the brake pads. In contrast, the brake pads are not made to be highly durable as the rotor and hence they wear out easily.
The useful life of a car brake rotor depends on the traffic condition in an area. For instance, your rotor will easily wear out when you drive more often in a heavily trafficked street as compared to driving in a traffic-free highway.
