The first law of nature is self-preservation and it's because of this law that the braking system was developed. We all know that once we pressed on the brake pedals our vehicles will slow down. But do you know how this happens? How your cars transmit the force applied by your leg to the wheels? The brake system of your vehicle includes different components such as the drum brakes, pedal, booster, master cylinder, combo valve, disc brakes a.k.a. disk brakes or brake rotors, lines, and emergency brakes that work together to bring your vehicle to a halt. But from among these components, it's the rotor that plays a crucial role in the actual stoppage of the vehicle. It stops the rotation of the wheel while in motion.

The brake rotor is easy to distinguish. It's the flat, round piece of metal which is connected to a rod held in place on each side by brake pads. Once the brake pedal is depressed, friction is produced resulting in the compression of the pads around the rotor. This action in turn results in the slowing or the stopping of the vehicle. The rotor is usually thick to dissipate the heat produced by the friction of the brake pads. In contrast, the brake pads are not made to be highly durable as the rotor and hence they wear out easily.

The useful life of a car brake rotor depends on the traffic condition in an area. For instance, your rotor will easily wear out when you drive more often in a heavily trafficked street as compared to driving in a traffic-free highway. You see the frequent stepping on the brake pedal can heat up the pads which in turn heats up the rotor and damage both components in the process.

You will know when the rotors of your car are damaged since they usually produce a screeching sound. This sound is not only annoying but is an indication that the pads have worn down so badly that they're now going metal to metal with the brake rotor. Neglecting to replace the rotor at once can be very dangerous since it can make your car wobble dangerously.
