The brake system in modern vehicles has been developed and refined for more than 100 years and finally, it has turn out to be highly efficient and reliable. The usual braking system is made up of disk brakes in the front and either drum or disk brakes in the rear wheels. A set of hoses and tubes link the brakes at every wheel to each other and to the vehicle’s master cylinder.

On a disk brake system, the fluid released by the master cylinder is pressed into a brake caliper where it pushes against a piston. Consequently, the piston squeezes two frictional materials called brake pads against the rotor that is attached to the vehicle’s wheel, causing it to slow down or to halt. The brake pads, brake rotor, brake caliper and the caliper support are the major parts of a disk brake system.

Those flat, disk-like plates providing the disc brake system with a friction surface are called brake rotors. As soon as hydraulic pressure is driven to the caliper, the brake pads which are pressed on both sides of the rotor generate heat and friction. Some vehicle rotors contain cooling fins stuck between both faces and they are dubbed as “vented” rotors. The brake rotors are made from iron and they feature highly machined friction surfaces.

Just like the brake pads, brake rotors also wear out in the long run. They too experience some wear which usually crop up by means of groves and ridges where the pads touch against it. Since the pad comes in contact with the rotor, they share the same wear pattern. When new brake pads are mounted, you should make sure that the brake rotors are resurfaced. This way, the new pads can have smooth surface to get in touch with. However, only a small quantity of substances making up the rotor can be machined off before it will be unfit for usage.

On every vehicle rotor, there a minimum measurement of thickness stamped unto it. Once the thickness of your vehicle’s brake rotor goes down the legal minimum, it will not be able to hold the high heat normally generated by the brakes. The result will be brake “fade” which greatly reduces their braking capability up to the point when you may not be able to stop anymore.
