Brake friction is created depending on the kind of braking system that your vehicle is equipped with – can either be equipped with a drum braking system – the one that is commonly used on older vehicles, or a disc braking system – the one that comes in fresher design and is more efficient as compare to the former. Drum brakes produce friction every time the driver applies pressure on the brake pedal. As a result, a certain mechanism creates pressure against the metal cylinder called brake drum, and will consequently produce friction that will stop or slow down the vehicle’s motion. Conversely, disc brakes produce friction when the driver applies pressure on the brake pedal. In this case, a device called caliper, while holding the brake pads, forces the pads against the disc-like plate called brake disc thereby converting the vehicle’s forward energy into heat and friction that will be used to slow down the vehicle’s or stop its motion.

The most vital component of the disc brake is the use of a brake disc (also called as brake rotors in other places) together with the brake caliper and the brake pads.
