Brake disc design varies. There are some units that come in simple solid cast iron while some have fins joining the two contact surfaces of the disc together. The latter is called ventilated disc design. It assists in dissipating the heat produced and is frequently used on the front brake discs that are more heavily loaded. Brake discs can also be slotted. In the said design, there are shallow channels machined into the disc in order to eliminate gas and dust. On the other hand, high performance brake discs feature holes that are drilled or cast though them. And this process is called cross drilling and was made to give the gas a place to escape. Some brake discs are both slotted and drilled.
