The brake system of your Infiniti I35 is composed of the disc brakes in the front and disk or drum brakes in the rear, a system of hoses and tubes that connects the brakes on each wheel to the master cylinder and others that work together in order that they will be able to slow down or stop the vehicle. The disk brake has several components that help each other out so that they will be able to do their task. One of the components of the brake disk is the Infiniti I35 Brake caliper.
The Infiniti I35 Brake caliper houses the brake pads and pistons. There are two types of brake calipers, the fixed and the floating calipers. The fixed caliper is immobile and uses one or more pairs of piston to clamp on each side of the disc. The floating caliper, otherwise known as the sliding caliper, moves along with the disc and a piston on one side forces the inner brake pad until it presses the braking surface. Then it pulls the caliper body with the outer brake pad so pressure is applied on both sides of the disc. The single piston floating caliper is more commonly use by vehicles because it is cheaper to manufacture and to service. There are also vehicles that maximize the use of two pistons on one side. Two piston floating calipers are found on more expensive and luxurious cars. The four piston fixed calipers though are more expensive to produce and takes more cost to service.
The Infiniti I35 Brake caliper is shaped like a U with the pistons on each side of the U. The brake pads line up the insides of the U while the brake disc goes inside of the U shaped caliper. When the brake pressure is engaged the brake fluid from the master cylinder is driven to the caliper, the calipers then pushes the piston which in turn presses the brake pads against the disc which then grasp the wheel to make it stop. Doing its function makes the caliper vulnerable to stress that could make it wear down. But the main problem of the brake caliper is the accumulation of brake fluid in the caliper that can cause it to rust and corrode and weakening the caliper.
Making sure that your brake caliper is in good condition is important because accidents can happen if it malfunctions.
