Ball Joint

Many car owners recognize the importance of the car’s steering and suspension system in their vehicles. The suspension system’s basic functions are to keep the car’s wheels in firm contact with the road and to provide comfort to its passengers. However, there are some car owners who are not fully aware of the different components comprising this system. They think that this system is only composed of springs, shocks, struts and sway bars but actually there are more than those. The car’s steering and suspension system still includes other important components and one of these is the ball joint.

The ball joint is a joint which is flexible and uses a ball and socket type of construction. This consists of a hardened-steel, a bearing stud, and a socket which is enclosed in a steel housing. The main uses of ball joint are for steering linkage setups and steering knuckle pivot supports. This serves as the pivot points between the suspensions and tires and in some vehicles, this supports weight and makes wheel alignment settings. Basically, vehicles that have the conventional type of suspension systems have two ball joints in each wheel. These are the upper and lower ball joints, on which cars with MacPherson strut suspension systems use the latter together with an upper strut bearing rather than the former.

Many vehicles are equipped with ball joints that are already lubed permanently. These permanently lubed ball joints are very convenient to car owners since they will not have to lube the ball joints from time to time, and besides this is actually not necessary because the pack that holds the lubrication is sealed permanently. However, when these wear out or get damaged, replacement ball joints that come with lubrication fittings are not the same as the one integrated on vehicles originally. This means that these replacement ball joints have to be lubricated regularly and this can be done when changing the vehicle’s oil.

Ball joints are integral parts of the vehicle’s suspension system that is why these should be carefully inspected to see if these are already worn out. Damaged ball joints can certainly affect the overall performance of the suspension system so better have replacement ball joints right away. At Parts Train, several ball joints that are developed for various models and makes are being offered online. Parts Train is a reliable online car parts store that gives accessibility and more convenience to online consumers.
