If you are familiar with the functions of the generator in old cars, then you are also familiar with the alternator. Modern cars or today’s vehicles are already equipped with alternators. This means that the functions of the generators in old cars are now the functions of the alternator. Since automobiles are equipped with electrical system that carries the power used in different parts like the ignition coils, engine cooling fans, headlight, radio, and a lot more, a vehicle then needs a device that will generate current through its entire function. And this device is called the alternator.

You might think that the electricity is actually obtained from the battery. To some extent this is true. This gas tank is where the fuel is stored and is used by vehicles to produce power. Through mechanical process that occurs during the combustion, the alternator then becomes active. The alternator actually produces an alternating current. Compared to generator that produces direct current, the alternator has the ability to generate higher voltage when the engine is in idle condition. With the generator, its function requires to run faster before it reach’s 13 to 14 volts. But the alternator can make this condition easily since its three sections can generate voltage out of phase through the other two sections. The phase is shifted in every 120 degrees which means that a single revolution puts out the three separate voltages from the alternator.

Diagnosing the alternator is actually difficult. But most of the time its failure start in stages. The failure could start from the windings or diodes that are found on every phase that the alternator does have. The alternator can still charge the battery at a limited current. But if the other two systems fail, that gives the alternator a major break down. And this only means that you have to replace this worn out alternator with a new one.
