The heart is considered as the center and the most important part of the human circulatory system. Its pumping motion allows blood to circulate around the system so that when it stops beating, the entirety of the circulatory system also stops functioning. In our vehicle's air conditioning system, there is a component that functions like the human heart. That auto part is the AC compressor, often called the heart of the automotive air conditioning system.

The AC compressor is a type of pump that is driven by a belt attached to the vehicle's engine. This belt is often called the AC compressor pulley and is engaged and disengaged to the AC compressor by an electromagnetic clutch called the AC compressor clutch.

Once engaged, the AC compressor acts like the human heart, pumping the auto air conditioning system's refrigerant throughout the various parts of the A/C system in a closed loop. In particular, the AC compressor takes in low-pressure refrigerant gas from the AC system's inlet side, also called the low-pressure side, composed of the evaporator and the accumulator or receiver/drier. In the compressor, the refrigerant is compressed and converted into a high pressure and high temperature gas. Once compressed, the hot refrigerant is then discharged into the condenser which is a major part of the A/C system's outlet or low-pressure side. From the condenser where the refrigerant is cooled, it is then delivered back to the evaporator, thus forming a closed loop.

Like the human heart, any complication or damage in the AC compressor can largely affect how the entire A/C system functions. It is, therefore, important that we take good care of our vehicle's AC compressor. It is also important to immediately repair or replace the compressor once a particular damage is detected. The good news is that there are a lot of sources, both online and local, for replacement AC compressors. The bad news is that replacing the AC compressor is not an easy task. Replacing the AC compressor, and any auto air conditioning system part for that matter, is a task that must exclusively be handled by a registered mechanic.
