The AC compressor does this job by pumping and forcing the liquid from the evaporator into a condenser, transferring it to an expansion valve and sending it back to the evaporator. AC compressors are of three common types – the two cylinder reciprocating piston type, the four cylinder radial type and the six cylinder axial type.

The A/C system is divided into two sides, a high pressure side and a low pressure side, which are also called discharge and intake or suction parts. It is the intake side that draws the refrigerant gas from the outlet of the evaporator. Once the low pressure refrigerant has been taken, the AC compressor then compresses it according to speed and air temperature. As the refrigerant is being compressed, its temperature raises, making it higher than that of the surrounding air. After that, the AC compressor sends the refrigerant to the condenser.

The AC compressor usually features a compressor clutch and a drive ring. The electromagnetic clutch can connect or disconnect the compressor pulley which rotates when the engine is running. The compressor will only operate when the said pulley is attached to the engine. The drive ring, on the other hand, can be found inside the AC refrigerant compressor. Both sides of the “swash” or “wobble” plate have this drive ring which is made up of a friction material. This friction material works by pushing the ball bearing back and forth as the swash plate spins.
