The said sensor is mounted on each wheel, so you actually have four in your vehicle. Its function is simple. All that it has to do is to detect the rate by which the wheels spin. Under normal conditions, the wheels will spin at the same rate altogether. However, once any of the wheels begins to lock up during braking, that wheel will decelerate at a very fast rate, and ABS speed sensors are designed to detect such incident. When the sensors detect this, they will send the data to the controller, which will in turn engage the ABS assembly.
The controller will reduce the pressure that it is sending to the brake controlling the wheel that's about to lock up. This way, it will be easy to prevent wheel skidding. Once the controller detects that the spinning of the wheel has returned to the normal rate, it will reapply the brakes to facilitate braking. All these happen, thanks to the operation of ABS speed sensors. Without these sensors, there's no way the controller can activate the system.
Other than sensors and controller, the ABS assembly is also composed of valves and pump. The valves are the components that control the brake lines (opening and closing) to allow pressure to get to the brakes or to cut pressure flow. Aside from this, the valves also release pressure. Meanwhile, the pump is designed to increase the pressure after it is reduced due to the valves' operation. Together with these two components and the controller, ABS speed sensors keep your ride safe by protecting you from possible danger brought by skidding and wheel lockup.
To ensure that your ride will always be safe, see to it that you keep your ABS parts in good shape. Sometimes, dirt collects on the sensor and it loses its ability to perform its function. At other instances, corrosion may also be present. The connections may have a problem and cause disruptions in the operation of the assembly.
